case, all of them under 30, those are the ones that people tend to play, because they coin side with birthdays, anniversaries, things like that. and they increase the chances of more than one winner. amy? >> but not likely enough for us. all right, david, thanks so much. we want to head to st. louis, missouri, home to the second winning ticket in this huge powerball jackpot. abc's alex perez is there live. alex, good morning. >> reporter: well, amy, good morning. this gas station like so many others was bustling with people buying sixties. the winning ticket was sold in the kansas city, missouri, area. officials are expected to say where it was sold exactly later today. retailers anxious to find out where the ticket was sold. the business owner that sold that ticket gets $50,000. this is the 27th winning powerball jackpot ticket in this state. missouri ranks second in powerball winners to indiana. indiana has 38 jackpot winners.

arizona has just 11 jackpot winners. who is the person that will step forward and claim the ticket? still unclear. when they do, mo will reveal the name and the town they live in. even though they may not want to publicly come forward, we'll know that information about them. we're hoping to learn some of those details a little bit later today. the excitement is growing here in missouri, because there is a powerball jackpot winner here. george? >> that will be a fun moment. thanks, alex. now, let's go to the chair of powerball's board of directors, norm lingle. thanks for joining us this morning. we're going to learn the winners in missouri and arizona later today. we've already said they can get $192 million something each if they take the lump sum. but they have the option of having it spread out over time. >> that is correct. the winners will have the option to choose the cash option or the

and drives the sales for these to even higher levels. and so, the steps we took in january certainly are paying off right now. >> they are. and two people will get a big payoff today. norm lingle, thanks very much. amy? now, to the wild and really wet storms drenching the west. so much rain, sam has been tracking all of the latest on this series of storms, sam? >> yesterday was rough enough from the bay area up the west coast. now, there's two more storm systems coming in. take a look at the trees down in the bay area. pictures out of marin county. we'll show you. lots of rain. one to three inches in the bay area. plenty of flooding there. the next system could bring six inches of additional rain. then by the weekend, the third system, two to four more inches of rain. let me show you what this looks like on the big 3-d view. look at the upper-level low here. and look at some of the little lows that are spiraling around it. those are smaller storm systems around the giant one. each one of those pushing wind and rain in along the coastline. we think there will be an additional area in that zone, from northern california,

probably to the oregon coast, where there's -- call it four, six inches of rain possible there with storm number two. and in the yellow area, six to eight inches of rain is possible. this will be the wettest time period with additional rain coming by the time we get to the end of the weekend. trees down. power lines down. road flooding. yep in the north coast. we'll get all of america's weather in a few minutes. >> boy, is that the sloppy. thanks, sam. we have a new development in the david petraeus controversy that cost the cia director his job. for the first time, we're hearing from the general himself about his affair with paula broadwell, in a letter to a friend and fellow general, he admits he, quote, screwed up royally. and abc's martha raddatz has the details from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. petraeus has talked largely through surrogates in the past few weeks. but now, he is communicating directly to friends. telling them his family will survive this. for the first time since he resigned as director of the cia, we're hearing from a seemingly candid general david petraeus, writing in a personal letter to

one of his former mentors. >> he said, dear jim. i can't thank you enough for your note, kind words, and support. i can't tell you how much it all meant. i screwed up royally. i paid the price, appropriately. >> reporter: long-retired brigadier general james shelton, says he's been friends with petraeus for more than three decades and reached out to him after he resigned. last week, he says petraeus wrote this note back. >> team petraeus will survive. though i have obviously created enormous difficulty for us. >> reporter: in the letter, petraeus writes that his wife, holly, is, quote, once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate i was to marry her. shelton says he was shocked when he learned about the former four-star general's affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. >> i didn't think he was expecting to happen what happened. >> reporter: shelton said he never met broadwell. but talked to her on the phone

as she worked on her book. even thanked in the book's acknowledgments as being wonderfully helpful. he said he found broadwell engaging. >> i don't think she wove a web around dave and dragged him in. i don't think that at all. i think it was mutual. >> reporter: shelton tells abc news while he was disappointed, he thinks petraeus made a one-time mistake. >> and that's how i believe dave petraeus was that kind of guy. that he wasn't looking for it. it happened. >> reporter: neither paula broadwell nor petraeus had any comment when we tried to reach them overnight. but, george, there are many here in washington who now wonder if this letter is the beginning of a carefully choreographed campaign by petraeus to rehabilitate his image. >> that would make some sense. martha, thanks very much. let's go to josh and the other top stories. a lot of action in washington on the fiscal cliff talk. >> we're going to begin there. signs, perhaps, of a potential

compromise there to avoid the so called fiscal cliff that would raise taxes on a typical american family by some $2,200. republican congressman tom cole, of oklahoma, is urging republicans to accept president obama's deal and allow the bush-era tax cuts on the wealthy to expire for now. so tax cuts for the middle class can stay in effect. but house speaker john boehner remains opposed, saying a tax hike on the wealthy will hurt the economy. today, president obama is hosting mitt romney at the white house for a private lunch. after the election, the president promised to reach out to romney for his ideas. and overseas, the u.s. could be getting more involved in the civil war in syria. "the new york times" is reporting the obama administration is considering options, including arming the rebel fighters there who have made progress in recent days in battling bashar al assad's forces. and more trouble for

president obama's expected nominee for secretary of state. susan collins says she will not back rice for the job, until more questions on the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya are answered. collins said if president obama nominates senator john kerry instead, he would have no trouble winning confirmation. and breaking news out of new york. lindsay lohan has been arrested again, after a fight at a nightclub here in the city early this morning. she is facing assault charges for allegedly punching a woman in the face. police are not saying how long they intend to keep her in custody. lohan was banned from the club, in fact, earlier this year. police say the woman lohan hit was not arrested. and zig ziglar, the motivational speaker/author, who inspired millions for decades, has died. his first quote, "see you at the

authorities say warren jeffs could make polygamy the law of the land. this morning, authorities want that land. the 1,600 acres that make up the yearning for zion ranch. in a 91-page court filing, officials say jeffs designed the compound for the purpose of facilitating and perpetrating criminal offenses, including bigamy and sexual assault. elisa wall is a former child bride from the ranch. and says its end is long overdue. >> i believe it's one more step for showing the leaders of the flds and showing that the government is not going to stop. >> reporter: authorities say jeffs, who has since been convicted of assaulting his young brides, used the temple and features he personally designed. there is a table, but it will be made so it can be a table or it can be a bed. it will be covered with a sheet. but it will have a plastic cover, to protect the mattress from what will happen on it. we had rare access to the

inside the interrogation room. it was revealed to the jury. we're going to talk about demi moore. apparently love back in her life, perhaps. she's on the dating scene, reportedly. and a new flame, he's eight years younger than her ex, ashton kutcher. >> that's coming up. let's begin with a dramatic day in the trial of the michigan valedictorian charged with murdering his mom. for the first time, the video seen of the defendant being interviewed by police. john muller has the details. >> someone killed your mom. >> reporter: for the first time in his first-degree murder trial, jurors in the community that continues to stand behind him, heard from jeffrey pyne. >> did you do anything at all today to hurt your mom? >> no. no. >> reporter: pyne, a former high school valedictorian in 2008, stands accused of beating his mother, ruth, to death in the family's michigan garage in 2011. friends and neighbors refuse to

believe he did it. prosecutors say he had a motive and opportunity. >> she got home from grocery shopping. and i helped her bring the groceries in. >> reporter: sitting in court wednesday, the 22-year-old showed little emotion. a stark contrast from the man jurors watched in this police interrogation video, shot hours after the murder. >> i'm having a hard enough time. >> reporter: in the tape, police can be seen checking pyne's body for signs of a struggle. >> can you take the bandages off your hands for us? >> reporter: officers also photographed injuries on his hand, blisters pyne said he got lifting wooden pallets at his job. >> i mean she's just -- she's always been a -- really nice lady. >> reporter: prosecutors suggest that was a lie. that ruth pyne had a history of mental illness and was often violent towards her children. in 2010, she was arrested and held in jail after attacking jeffrey. >> she just went manic, i guess -- it was a change. she wasn't depressed anymore. she just got crazy.

>> reporter: but the day of her death, jeffrey pyne told investigators things had been getting better. >> no type of fight or argument? >> no, i didn't -- we didn't raise our -- we didn't argue today. >> reporter: this morning, jeffrey pyne maintains his innocence. and while jurors may have heard his story on this grainy tape, it's still not clear if he'll take the stand to tell them in person. for "good morning america," john muller, abc news, new york. let's get more from our "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. that's a tough tape for jeffrey pyne. >> and a really important tape. we talked about the fact that this is a tough case for prosecutors. i think if the jurors come back with a conviction, it will somehow be connected to this tape. most important question or issue that comes up on this tape is the timing. remember, her body's found around 2:30. he says he leaves the house around 1:00 to 1:30. and prosecutors are trying to move that timeline back, back, back, to say, in essence, huh-uh. he hadn't left -- >> with another key witness.

>> another key witness said, for example, his car was at the house at 1:40, but not at 2:10. so, his words become absolutely crucial, with regards to that timeline because if the jurors don't believe it, that could be a problem. >> he's gotten so much support from the community. been pretty sympathetic defendant. but you see on the tape, in a moment, he's not even asked how his mom died. >> and those -- that's one of those small details that certainly investigators focus on. and the question is going to be how much the jurors focus on that. you'll hear, certainly, in the closing argument, the prosecutor mentioned the fact that he never asked. and the question is going to be, do jurors say to themselves, huh? that's so hard to believe that he wouldn't want to ask that question? or do they say, he was under duress? he was nervous, et cetera. we can understand. but that's why every single world on this interrogation tape becomes so important. >> does this make it less likely we see him testify? >> i don't think there's a chance he's going to testify. this is one of the case where's the defense say they simply have not proved they're case beyond a reasonable doubt.

>> okay, dan abrams, thanks very much. now, to a different kind of lottery story. explosive testimony in the florida murder trial of the woman accused of swindling a multimillion-dollar winner and then killing him. opening statements starting wednesday, followed by shocking, new details from the woman's ex-husband. abc's linsey davis is here with the very latest. linsey? >> reporter: good morning, amy. some damning testimony, from dee dee's ex-husband, about a hole he needed to dig with a backhoe. who said she needed to bury debris for construction. prosecutors say there was no body in that -- there was actually a body in that hole, not debris. for the second time in as many days, dee dee moore couldn't contain her tears, as she sat in this florida courtroom. moore's on trial for fatally shooting worker-turned-millionaire, abraham shakespeare. >> she took extreme, calculated steps to avoid detection. >> reporter: for more than an hour wednesday, prosecutors

detailed what they call moored diabolical scheme to rob and then kill the 22-year-old, who she had a business relationship with. >> do you get tired of people asking you for money all the time? >> they don't take no for an answer. >> reporter: abraham shakespeare went from rags to riches in 2006, when he bought a quick pick ticket, winning millions. three years later, he had gone through most of it. prosecutors say, that's when he met dee dee moore. and she says he agreed to let her manager his money. >> six feet down, they find abraham shakespeare's remains. >> reporter: police say they found shakespeare's body in moore's back yard, covered in concrete in 2009. moore denies she had anything to do with his death. >> are you a murderer? >> no. >> reporter: but on wednesday, her former husband, james, took the stand. saying he dug that hole and then covered it up, at his wife's request. >> did you look in the hole? >> no, sir. >> reporter: moore sat quiet, writing notes on wednesday.

a far cry from this, a day before, when the judge scolded her for using body language that could be communicating with jurors. >> they think i'm guilty. by sitting here looking down? >> ma'am. >> reporter: moore's attorneys argued that the case against their client is based only on circumstance, not hard facts. >> little or known direct evidence can prove this charge of murder. >> reporter: prosecutors say dee dee admitted to an undercover officer that she was going to pay him $50,000 over time to take the fall for the murder. that's what months after shakespeare's death, police say led them to his body, which they said had been shot twice in the chest with a .38 caliber pistol, belonging to moore. amy? >> a lot of evidence in that case. linsey, thanks so much. time for a check of the weather and sam champion. sam? >> we begin with pictures out of italy. what a rough storm season. since october, six tornadoes in italy. now, they get a few every year.

"usa today" reporting, texas, arizona, iowa, florida, are especially in need of such workers. we're just getting new video of actress lindsay lohan, covering her face with a jacket after being arrested in new york. she's accused of punching a woman in a nightclub. she faces third-degree assault charges. amanda knox is telling her story in a new memoir, more than a year after an italian court overturned her conviction for the murder of her roommate. the book, "waiting to the

you got him to open up about everything. we're going to hear about the chanel ads, which josh really loved. >> yes. he leads this amazingly talented cast in this new movie. james gandolfini, you just saw a moment ago. we have our chat. we talked about this new movie "killing them softly." he plays a brutally efficient, but squeamish mob hit man. and on the eve of the christmas holiday, we shared a laugh about the chanel ads and took a walk down memory lane. actor, producer, philanthropist and fourth of six, brad pitt is here to talk about his new film, "killing them softly." it opens this friday. good morning. good to have you here. >> good morning. how are you? >> i want to read you something a critic from "the guardian" wrote that hit it. this is an ensemble of middle management mobster incompetence. a world of weary hit guys, complaining of having to clean up the mess for far less money than they'd hoped for. >> that's pretty good. i like that.

>> you are brutally efficient at your job. but you don't like feelings. let's look at a clip here. >> ever killed anyone? >> no. >> you get touchy-feely. >> touchy-feely? >> emotional. they cry. they beg. they plead. they call for their mothers. it's embarrassing. i like to kill them softly. >> it's business, you know? they're nice guys. you know, they're nice guys. they've been really -- you know, they're not bad people. they just stepped out of line. they went against the rules. and they have to be fired. >> it's a violent movie. >> it doesn't hold back on the violence. but it's not, like, you know, there's three deaths in the whole thing. >> but it's also funny. >> i think so. >> how would you characterize this? would you call it a black comedy? >> there's some black humor in it. but i consider it an intelligent drama.

with a few dark laughs in there. >> a guy told me you come in here a lot around this time of day. so, i came in. >> i don't know who you are. >> very few guys do. >> you handled a gun pretty well in this. >> well, you know, i'm no stranger to guns. we grew up with them. it's kind of a rite of passage in the ozarks. >> in the ozarks. i spent a lot of time in the ozarks. >> is that right? >> you and i were both at the university of missouri at the same time. >> that is correct. >> i did my homework. and i dug up a couple pictures of you and me. >> really? >> let's show brad a picture of himself in college. there you are. >> oh, man. yeah. the '80s were hard on a lot of us. >> this is a picture of me. i'm rockin' the bow blouse. and the rita kalow unibrow.

we can lose that now. >> what's going on here? >> it's a bow blouse. don't you remember -- okay. we can lose the photo now, guys. it's a little scary, looking back at those '80s photos. >> you know, both our hair cuts are -- two inches longer than they were. >> is that scary or what? now, i have to ask you. did you see the "snl" send up on your chanel commercial? >> no. i hear it's good. >> it's funny. >> dreams take over. and the dreams, wake up and smile at reality. i'm sorry. is there really no script? >> do you have a sense of humor about the whole thing? >> it's fair play. it's all fair. we did -- i did press all day yesterday. and i was getting crushed. >> you were? >> crushed. >> why? what were they saying? >> just that. it's the -- a hot topic. >> you're designing furniture now? >> just for a lark. over the last 20 years, i played around with it. when my mind's heavy or i'm distracted. >> like designing? drawing?

doodling? >> yeah. and decided to get serious about it a few years ago with a friend of mine. and tried some things out. >> and harrison ford, he was a carpenter. >> i think he crafts them himself. i'm not -- i pay somebody. >> you're not the building guy? you're not out there with the hammer? >> i'd like to. >> all right. well, brad pitt, happy holidays. what are you going to do for christmas? >> we don't know yet. we'll figure that out when we finish up work next week. >> so, you can take some time off? good luck to you. >> okay. thank you. >> and happy holidays. >> okay. >> pitt told me he and angelina spend most of their time at the base camp in france. probably will spend christmas there. by the way, he speaks no french. his kids do speak it fluently, he says. he's limited to, mai oui, which means, but yes. they tried it in "killing it softly."

friends. and playing with her guinea pig, toby. >> she's been totally normal since birth until last year. she had no issues. we had never had her in the hospital, ever. >> reporter: but last february, after complaining of headaches and stomachaches, frehley's family brought her to the doctor. and they found a tumor in her brain. fortunately, they were able to remove it entirely. >> she's amazing. she's like a little rock. and that's what kept us all together. >> reporter: frehley is part of the make-a-wish program. and her wish? >> i wish to meet salena gomez because she's awesome. >> reporter: she thinks she and her family came to new york to talk to "gma" about make-a-wish and have some ice cream at the serendipity restaurant. what was it like? was it scary? did you just want them to do it? what was it like? >> it wasn't scary.

it was just good to get done with it. >> reporter: yeah. >> from the moment this all started, she's just been fearless. >> reporter: have you had a frozen chocolate yet here? >> no. >> reporter: oh, they're so good. we made some small talk while we waited for our desserts to arrive. what do you do with a guinea pig? i never got to have one. >> they don't do much. he just sits on my lap. >> reporter: but who was waiting downstairs was a much bigger surprise. what did you say your wish was? >> to meet selena gomez? >> reporter: to meet who? >> selena gomez. >> reporter: what if i said i could make that wish come true, right now? >> hi. >> hi. >> what's your name? >> frehley. >> nice to meet you, frehley. have you been having fun? >> yeah. >> thank you for letting me come meet you. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: guess what has arrived. >> this is for everyone? >> this is for us?

welcome. >> thank you. what do you mean, the big guy? >> it's the best holiday story ever. and anyone who puts on the suit and plays the role of santa, those are big shoes to fill. are you aware of the weighty responsibility? >> it's not that dissimilar from my previous role. i carry a big bag around and give people things. >> oh, newman. very, very funny. but the character in "elf," the main character, if you've seen the movie, we all know. he has a bit of an identity crisis. >> yes. >> how do you bring that to life on stage? >> well, if you've been raised by elves, and you're a human being, there's a duality in your life that really needs to play out on the stage. >> well, we need to see a little snippet, everybody. we've got a little scene here? >> yes. here, the story is, that buddy, who has been raised by elves, is actually human. and he's got a human birth father, who is now working for a
